Keyboards, pranks and other distractions

The day today has been full of chaos and unexpected events, but in the end it has not turned out that bad. It all started with me oversleeping slightly, just enough to give me a scare, but luckily not so much that the kids were late for school. I had to rush through my morning routine while the kids were getting ready instead of before waking them up, but they are already old enough that they can be mostly autonomous.

Later in the morning I had to drive to the office to talk to a colleague who had been hanging "Video surveillance" signs on the walls as a prank meant to protest the containment measure linked to the corona virus epidemic. In this case the conflict between freedom of speech obviously clashed with the impersonation of an official sign. However, even if I tried to talk reason into him, he just argued that growing in Russia you know that there is always surveillance and that it did not matter if the sign was official or not. I was not in the mood to pick up a (verbal) fight, so instead I decided to let it sit and headed back to my office.

There I found the third distraction of the day, not one but two brand-new mechanical keyboards that I ordered online a couple of days. I was not sure if I would prefer the clicky or the smooth version, so I went for both knowing that I will have 30 days to return the one that I do not like (or both if necessary). It turns out that, when talking about mechanical keyboards I prefer the one with the clicking sound, so go given that I have a single office and I do not risk annoying a colleague with it, I will keep it and return the other one.

The fourth and final distraction of the day has been the visit of one of Trevor's friends in the late afternoon. Even in the times of corona virus, now that the restrictions have started to ease, life goes on and play dates (even at age 13) have to start happening again at some point. So today we are having Will with us for a sleep-over.

Even with all the turmoil I have managed to keep up-to-date in my day job and continued with the online course. The part where I have not made any progress yet is reading and preparing the presentation of the paper that the professor requested. One of these days I really have to sit down and read the paper at least to make sure that I will be able to me a decent presentation out of it. In the meantime, enjoy the weekend and I will write back to you on Monday. Cheers!
